Map of the Caribbean. 16th-century map of the Caribbean Sea, showing the islands of Cuba (upper left) and Hispaniola (upper right). This map is one of the earliest made of the area. Other islands include Jamaica (left of Hispaniola), Puerto Rico (San Juan, right of Hispaniola), Bermuda (top right), Trinidad (lower right) and Guanaja (far left). The coast of South America is across bottom. Misplaced islands at right include the Canary Islands and Cape Verde Islands. This map is from an account of Spanish discoveries: 'Opera, Legatio, Babylonica, Oceanidecas, Paemata, Epigrammata' (Seville, 1511) by Peter Martyr d'Anghiera (1457-1526).
