The Speakers Coup D'etat, withdrawal of the Irish home rulers from the Commons, February 1881
From an original engraving Cassell's history of England circa 1901 showing the withdrawal of Home rulers from the commons in protest at the Speakers closure motion on The Preservation of Life and Property (Ireland) Bill which was opposed by Charles Stewart Parnell and the Irish Nationalist MPs, and they deployed delaying tactics until Speaker Brand used his authority to introduce a closure of debate as the only effective means of continuing with parliamentary business. They later returned and attempted to disrupt proceedings again until Parnell and 35 other MPs were named and suspended for the remainder of the day for disruption in challenging the decision of the Speaker
