American journalist Mary Ashton Rice Livermore (1820-1905) strongly supported women's rights. She was also an abolitionist. After graduating from an all-women seminary in Charlestown, Massachusetts, she worked as a teacher for two years. In this illustration dating to 1906, Mrs. Livermore (she married Universalist minister Daniel Livermore in 1845) is shown as a governess to two children. - at the time she was till Mary Ashton Rice.
