It is only to be found in Ireland, where it was formerly of great ufe in clearingthe country from Wolves.;—It is now extremely rare,and is kept rather for fhow than ufe, being equally un-ferviceable for hunting either the Stag, the Fox, or theHare. Thefe Dogs are about three feet liigh, generally of awhite or cinnamon colour, and made fomewhat like aGreyhound, but more robufl: Their afped: is mild, and HISTORY OF QUADRUPEDS. 341 their difpofition gentle and peaceable: Their ftrength isfo great, that in combat the Maftiff or Bull-Dog is farfrom being equal to them. They moftly feize their anta-gonifls by the back, and fliake them to death, whichtheir great fize generally enables them to do with Buffon fuppofes the Great Damp Dog to be only a vtiriety of the Irifh Greyhound.
