Portuguese colours: whitewashed walls with a blue plinth, set off by a sturdy red fuchsia and pots of geraniums flanking the blue window surrounds of this typical traditional home in a peaceful cobbled street away from the tourists thronging the centre of the ancient walled town of Óbidos, Centro, Portugal.

Óbidos, Centro, Portugal: a typically colourful traditional Portuguese house in a cobbled alley or back street in this historic walled town, with a whitewashed facade, a blue-painted plinth and window surrounds, pots of geraniums flanking the first floor windows and a thriving red fuchsia climbing beside the front door. The name Óbidos derives from the Latin “oppidum”, meaning “walled city”, but the town is much older, dating back to Portugal’s Celtic period. It only became a Roman possession in the 1st century AD. The Romans, who called the town Eburobrittium, were followed by the Visigoths and other Germanic tribes in the 5th century. The Moors took over in the 8th century before Portugal’s first king, Alphonso Henriques, conquered the town in 1149. Óbidos is known as the “wedding present town” because it was a gift King Dinis gave to Queen Isabel on their wedding day in 1282. Óbidos then became the property of Portuguese queens until the 1800s.
