Jules Verne's 'From the Earth to the Moon' (1865). This scene (showing the big gun factory at Goldspring, near New York, USA) is from the first edition, illustrated by Henri de Montaut. Written by French author Jules Verne (1828-1905), the title in French of this science fiction novel is 'De la Terre a la Lune'. The story tells of the projectile launch of a Moon vehicle, with examples of advanced technology of the 1860s. The novel is one of the earliest examples of science fiction stories dealing with travel to the Moon.
