Schellenberg, Liechtenstein - June 30, 2015. Hinterschellenberg monument near the Austrian border in Schellenberg village, Liechtenstein. In 1945, about 500 Russian soldiers who had fought on the German side in WWII crossed the border in search of asylum. Liechtenstein was the only country not to cede to the Soviet Union s demands that such soldiers be extradited to the USSR which generally meant death. They stayed in Liechtenstein for about two-and-a-half years, after which most made for Argentina.
