Productsof a similar description have been introduced in pharmacy, and recom-mended as substitutes for animal or vegetable fats in the preparationof ointments or liniments. Among these, the Unguentum Petrolei is distinguished by itshaving a firmer consistence and a higher melting point, and in theserespects it resembles pure lard, from which it difiers in that it is en-tirely free from liability to become rancid or to undergo any chemicalchange. It has an amber color, and a smooth, jelly-like appearance,and is almost wholly free from odor or taste. It is free from, and in-soluble in water.
