With regard to the trickling of the tears, though, generally fpeaking, it is prevented bythe method I have recommended ; yet it doesnot appear at all wonderful it mould fo fre-quently be the confequence of the others, when we confider how much at beft the faccuscontracts after a great deal of it has been de-ftroyed; and how poflible it is for the woundto fill up with granulations of flefh, whichcannot fail to prove an obftacle to their paf-fage into the nofe. PLATE XI. The Explanation. A. The eye, with the fkin of the eye-lidsdenuded in order to fhow the orbicularismufcle : the white ftreak running from theinner angle of the eye toward the nofe iscalled the tendon of the orbicularis mufcle, though I think it rather a fmall ligament. Ata little diflance from the internal angle, onthe edge of the eye-lids may be obferved twoblack fpots, which are the orifices of the la-chrymal. I have here taken careto mow the oblique direction of the bag, asit runs from the nofe towards the orbit. From comparing this figure with the fi-tuation of the puncla lachrymalia in the fore-going one, it will appear that only the upperpart of the bag lies under the tendon of theorbicularis mufcle, and confequently is theonly part wounded, and burnt through in thecommon operation, when the perforator iscarried horizontally from the angle into thenofe, as is generally practifed. And I believethe fize of the bag here reprefented, thoughnot fo large as when it is difeafed, wil
