Stone was born in 1843, the son of a memberof the Legislature of Massachusetts. He is ofRevolutionary ancestry, w^as a farmers lad, thena school teacher, and finally, by his unaidedeffort, put himself through Williams College andgraduated with high honors. When he wasbarely of age he came to Warren, Pa., as principal 63 of its public school. From this on liis public lifehas been as follows : In 1869 he was elected to the HoiivSe of Repre-sentatives and was returned in 1870. In 1876 hewas elected to the State Senate, and in 1878 wasnominated Lieutenant Governor on the same ticketwith General Henry M. Ho3t, who w^as the nom-inee for Governor, and elected.
