WWI. Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy. Monfalcone : the Italian trench 'Joffre'. It is called after Gen. Joseph Joffre, who commanded the French army up to the battle of Verdun (1916). The trench connected Monfalcone railway station with the first line at 'Quota 121' and 'Quota 85'. The infantrymen got off the troop-train and reached the hell of the first line in ten minutes. The word “la pace vogliamo” (we want peace) engraved on the wall. Episodes of desertion and disobedience were not so rare at the front, and they were almost always punished with execution by shooting.
