SOUVENIR OF ALGERIA BY EUGENE FROMENTIN EUGENE EROMENTIN 93—SOUVENIR OF ALGERIA \^ North Africa is full of surprises in architect-ure, and the subject of this picture shows to whatan extent the artist was impressed by the juxta-position of modern and ancient structures. Amany-arched and half-ruined aqueduct, leadingto an acropolis of moderate height crowned withsimple massive buildings whose rigid lines areagreeably broken by a tower or two, occupies themiddle distance, leaving a glimpse of distant hillsbeyond on the left. The southern sunlight forcesinto strong contrast the masses of architectureand brings out the rich and kaleidoscopic-coloredgarments of a group of Arab horsemen cara-coling over the rough ground as they approachthe citadel. The deep blue sky is broken by a fewgray clouds, and patches of green turf and thefamiliar aloe enrich the rough ground surround-ing the buildings. Signed at the left, Eug. Fromentin.
