Jamaican sugarcane, pressed specimen. This specimen of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) was collected in around 1688 in Jamaica by the English physician Hans Sloane (1660-1753). Sloane built up a huge collection of pressed plants filling many volumes. He bequeathed his collections of plants and other objects to the nation, and they formed the basis of the British Museum. The plant collections are housed at the Natural History Museum, London, UK.
