Emporia, Kansas 3-21-2014 Crews from AT&T splice cables back together repairing the damage caused by an oversized vehicle that was hauling a farm grain storage tank that snagged the overhead phone cable pulling it and four blocks of phone poles and street lights down along Commerical street and Merchant streets in Emporia. The truck belonging to Meridian Manufacturing Inc. of Storm Lake Iowa was driving south on state Route 99 which is the truck route that runs north and south thru Emporia for oversized vehicles which cannot pass under the bridges on the Interstate due to height restrictions. The truck was being escorted by D-H pilot car service of Albert City Iowa. According to Emporia Police Lieutenant Jim Tilton the trucking firm failed to secure the necessary permts for travel thru the town of Emporia which only cost $50 dollars and allows the 10 different agencies that need to provide traffic control and cable clearance time to get into place. Due to this lack of planning the damage caused by being 3 inches overheight are upwards of one milion dollars. Just for the one traffic signal unit that the truck destroyed costs 100 thousand dollars and the 9 telephone poles cost $1800 dollars each, plus the overtime and labor costs for the repairs: and including the fine of $40,000 from Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad because the 3rd overweight truck of this convey crossed the railroad tracks without securing the necessaary permits from BNSF.
