Of the water which falls upon the land, part runs off into surfacestreams, j)art evaporates, and i)ait is absorbed by the land and byplant growth. The pioportions vary with the rainfall, soil texture,geologic structure, and topography, the volume of rainfall being themost important factor. In northeastern Nebraska the rainfall variesconsiderably in the different counties, with a general diminutionfrom east to west, the normal annual precipitation ranging from 27to 28 inches in Dakota, Dixon, and Cedar counties to less than 23inches in parts of Boyd and northern Plolt counties.
