Battery 223 was built at the start of World War !! with the intention of strengthening coastal defenses. One of three batteries associated with Fort Miles of Cape Helopen, Delaware, the bunker was equipped with a 6-inch gun battery that could reach 9 miles and protect the entrance to Delaware Bay
