Eight or more cars have had the breaker relocatedin this manner at present. When the cars come intothe shop for repairs or overhauling this change will bemade until the entire system is changed over. A forge is generally avail-able only in the blacksmith shop so it becomes necessaryto do one of two things, either take all riveting workto the blacksmith shop or devise some portable heatingequipment so that the work can be done wherever itis most convenient. The Des Moines City Railwayfavors the latter method and has designed and con-structed a portable forge or rivet heater. The stand of the heater is built up from lA-in. xli-in. angle corner posts cross braced by ^-in. x l:i-in. iron straps. The bottom an-gles are the same size asthe corner posts and thefloor is No. 12 sheet fire box is built of firebrick lined with fire claymixed with common salt andthe whole is incased in gage sheet iron.
