The early 1900s caption reads: “BETROTHAL OF MAXIMILIAN TO MARY OF BURGUNDY.—It was this betrothal between the heiress of Burgundy and Maximilian of Austria that laid the foundation for all the wealth and territory which the Austrian house of Hapsburg gained by marriage. It is therefore a favorite subject with Austrian artists. The young folks themselves, however, thought little of the political importance of their match. They were, as the picture shows them, mutually attracted and thoroughly in love.”
