The granitic Seychelles group consists of 41 islands and islets sit- uated between 4-5°S and 55-56°E, rising from the Seychelles Bank, a shoal area of some 31,000 sq. km with water depths of less than 60 m, surrounded by ocean 4-5 km deep. The largest island is Mahe, with a land area of 154 sq. km, rising to 914 m in Morne Seychellois, the highest point of the group. Praslin, 35 sq. km in area, rises to 427 m and Silhouette, which covers sq. km, ascends to 867 m.
