Dewan Khass, Hall of Audience at the Palace of Delhi

The Dewan Khass, (Dewan Khas, Divan-i-Khas) or Hall of Audience - Palace of Delhi is shown in the engraving. The magnificent hall was used by the emperor for audiences with dignitaries and foreign envoys. Its walls were encrusted with precious stones and the coup d’oeil contained a crystal chair and the fabled peacock throne which was taken off to Persia by Nadir Shah when invaded India in 1739. It was broken up his successor Adil Shah. The crystal chair was sent to England in 1858 and most of the precious stones prised off the walls by British soldiers when they occupied Delhi at the end of the Indian Rebellion (Indian Mutiny) of 1857.
