Hallgrimskirkja (church), Reykjavik, Iceland


Iceland, Reykjavik, Hallgrimskirkja, the vast modernist church that looms over Reykjavik. In front is a statue of Leifur Eriksson the Viking chief who almost certainly discovered America 500 years before Columbus. The 75m high steeple is flanked by concrete representations of basalt columns. The church took an incredible 34 years to be completed starting in 1940 and opening in 1974
