Bathurst, Australia, October 5th, 1986: Ambulance crew members and track safety marshalls move injured race driver, Mike Burgmann to a waiting ambulance following his 260km per hour impact with tyre barriers near the bottom of the 2km long Conrod Straight. Later, Mike Burgmann became the first driver to die while competing in the Bathurst 1000 when he was pronounced dead on arrival at the nearby Bathurst Hospital. The following year a chicane was added to Conrod Straight to slow drivers and bring the 2km straight up to world racing standard.
