Hoo House, n/a, United Kingdom. Architect: Jerry Tate Architects, 2010. Partial rear elevation.

On a site in a market town in Suffolk, this new-build timber framed house is a modern interpretation of local agricultural buildings. Internally the smaller rooms are grouped together in one half of the envelope volume to allow a dramatic double-height living space with a fireplace at the centre. A combination of air source heat pump, super-insulation, solar-thermal panels and clever daylighting strategies reduce the energy requirements of the house, so that it produces 60% less carbon emissions compared to a UK ‘standard’ new-build house. The house was described by Kevin McCloud on Channel 4’s Grand Designs in 2010 as ‘a template for the ideal modern family home’.
