An-napolis was chosen as the most suitablelocation for such an institution, andacademic routine began Oct. 10th, 1845. Captain Franklin Buchanan, of Mary-land, was its first Superintendent. Dur-ing the Civil War, 1861-65, he was anadmiral in command of the ConfederateNavy. Since 1900 the U. S. Governmentlias expended ten millions of dollars inthe erection of magnificent buildings forthe accommodation and education ofyoung men for officers of the UnitedStates Navy.
