But it is as a grape growing State that Missouri ranks above all States may compete with her in other fruits, but in grape cultureshe is the acknowledged leader, and Missouri grape growers have done 48 MISSOURI. more to advance this branch of horticulture in the United States thanthose of all other States combined. Missouri is the native habitat of thegrape. Wild vines grow to great dimensions, sometimes reaching tenand twelve inches in diameter. Some of these have been cultivated with. great success with the result of adding several valuable varieties to thelist of standard grapes. These have an excellent adaptation to winemaking. Missouri has originated more new varieties than anj^ other MISSOURI. 49 State and that tier wines are of superior quality is attested by the factthat since its advent as a wine-making State, Missouri wines havereceived the highest awards at every worlds fair. The native varieties of grapes while producing the best quality ofclarets, Burgundies and sherries, are free from the grape blight, known asphylloxera, which has been so disastrous to the wine interests of Franceand lately has invaded California.
