As the tongs are hoisted the lower jaws are forcedoutward and firmly grip the wheel. Near the top of the framework is hinged an auxiliary latch with an extended arm, bywhich it may be thrown in or out of operation. Before lower-ing the wheel into the annealing pit this auxiliary latch isthrown over so that when the wheel strikes the bottom thetoggle closes and the auxiliary latch engages the pin andprevents the tongs from again griping the wheel. 126 AMERICAN ENGINEER AND RAILROAD JOURNAL.
