His Daughter ofthe Regiment is a bril-liant little opera, withits rollicking songs, itsdrums, its vivaciousheroine and its comicold Corporal. The Marchioness, who had married a Frencharmy captain far beneath her own rank, imme-diately recognizes the young girl as her daugh-ter. The marriage had been a secret one andthe child was confided to her fathers care at herbirth. Not wishing to acknowledge this marriageeven now, the Marchioness declares Marie to beher niece, and dismisses Tonio as a totally unfit
