Hypertrophy may exist insmall or great degree. It mayhave the effect of causing anenlargement of the cervix lat-erally, only (see Fig. 15) givinggreatly increased thickness tothe walls of the cervix, and gen-erally accompanied with a cor-responding enlargement of theos uteri. In other cases the hypertrophy produces an elonga-tion of the cervix, without any considerable increase in itsdiameter. On introducing the uterine sound, in some cases wefind the cervical and uterine cavity to measure from fourto six inches. In women who have borne children we. Itwould be a case of procidentia and not hypertrophy, unless themeasurement of the uterine canal showed considerable in-crease above what is normal; and, further,, simply an increasein the length of the uterine cavity, with prolapse, will notindicate hypertrophy of the cervix positively, for the gravidwomb and a condition of sub-involution would present thiscondition of elongation. (Of course, the reader will under-stand the sound is never to be introduced if there is anyprobability of pregnancy.) We must be sure that the elon-gation is due to increase of length in the cervix.
