The city gate, a local government building in the media harbour area of Dusseldorf , North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

In the Middle Ages, city gates were defensive towers made of stone. However, the architects in Dusseldorf have redefined the gateway to the city. Karl Heinz Petzinka designed a transparent building cladded with an energy-conserving double-skin facade. The city gate was awarded the prize for the best ecological office building in Europe.
