The first was fittedwith refrigerators on the Carre, or ammonia absorption system, and brought over as much as 20,000 carcases, or about 500tons of mutton at a time. The Frigorifique was fitted withcompression machines on the Tellier system, in which heatwas abstracted by the evaporation of methylic ether, thevapour being subsequently condensed and used over again;and carried about 100 tons of meat. Both these vessels madeseveral very successful trips and landed their cargoes in goodcondition, but neither the machines nor their mode of applica-tion were considered suitable for marine purposes, and their usewas discontinued and has never since been revived
