Grey clouds white sunshine view sea ice blocks on sand ripples at the edge of calm seawater, beach east of St Annes, Lancashire

the winter of 2010-2011 included the coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature was minus 1 degree Celsius. In some places the temperature was down to minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 included two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The beach in and around St Annes, on Lancashire's Fylde Coast, in December 2010 displayed large areas of land-fast sea, several centimetres thick. Seven sea ice blocks on sand ripples at the margin of calm seawater, looking south across the River Ribble Estuary towards a white un shining through grey clouds, on the beach east of St Annes.
