He was conspicuous for hisbravery at Molino del Rej^, and wasbrevetted major for his gallant andmeritorious conduct in the battles ofContreras and Cherubusco, and wasl)rcvetted lieutenant colonel for gal-lant and meritorious conduct at the battle of Molino del Rey. Twelve ^^*-^^-^; J*^°^°^ ^-^•years of unbroken frontier service in Texas followed. He was lieu-tenant colonel of the 8th Infantry when Fort Sumptcr was fired 68 NORWICH UNIVERSITY. and was surrendered by General Twiggs, but he heroically refused togive his parole not to fight the Confederacy, and he was held a prisonerfrom April 1861, untU May, 1862, the latter portion of the timebeing spent in Prison. Being at length exchanged, he rejoinedhis regiment, then serving under General Buell and remained withthem until the battle of Perryville, where he was twice severely wounded;when his men fell back, he to urge them on, rode in front of them, andgallantly urgedthem to follow him. He rode a white horse which made hima conspicuous mark for the enemy. He was brevetted colonel for his gallantryin this battle and when the war ended, he was a brevet brigadier was promoted colonel of the 8th Infantry, May 18, 1864. He then didservice on the western frontier until 1874, when he was retired. He removedto Elizabeth N. J., where he resided until his death.
