There are two kinds of sundials, horizontal and per- pendicular, the latter being affixed to the side of a build- ing or wall and therefore not so often of use in the garden. The dial proper is mounted •on a pedestal, usually of stone or marble, and must be abso- lutely level, with the gnomen or shadow-casting piece point- ing to true north.
