With astrange fatality, there was increasing on the other hand, a tendency in thepulpit to use a theological dialect, that might be called a religious slang—a vocabulary of terms that were not in ordinary use in the market, the courtand the street; so that the plain business man, not being a theological expert,failed to understand the sermons he heard.
