Mary Douglas Nicol Leakey (1913-1996) and her husband Louis Seymour Bazett Leakey (1903-1972), British archaeologists and palaeoanthropologists, displaying one of their fossil finds. The Leakeys made a number of significant discoveries in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania. In 1959 Mary found a fossil skull of Paranthropus boisei (formerly Australopithecus and Zinjanthropus boisei) that was million years old. They also discovered stone tools, the remains of Homo habilis and the Laetoli footprint trail that showed that hominids had acquired a bipedal gait by million years ago. Photographed in 1962.
