In 5-6 billion years the Sun will have exhausted the hydrogen fuel in its core, and it will begin burning hydrogen in a shell surrounding the core. This will cause the Sun to expand to form a subgiant star. By this stage, the atmosphere and water on Earth will have been lost to space.
