Egyptian: Relief or Votive Plaque of the God Bes, Unidentified artist, Egyptian, 664–30 , Limestone with red and black pigment, This limestone plaque depicts Bes, an ancient Egyptian god believed to protect against evil. Bes is usually shown with a grimacing face, sometimes sticking out his tongue; and unlike other Egyptian deities, he is often rendered nude. In this example, the shaft of his (now lost) phallus was carved separately, perhaps from a different material, and inserted in the hole. Because of his role in warding off danger, Bes was one of the most popular gods of ancient Egypt.
