Quakers were persecuted in Eng-land. William Penn joined them in spite of his fathers opposition. and drove Calvert out of the colony. But Calvert soon raiseda loyal force and defeated Clay borne. After a while the Protestants gained control of the govern-ment and deprived Catholics of their rights. This caused acivil war Avhich lasted for five years, and ended in thetriumph of the Catholics. For more than a quarter of acentury the colony prospered, and then another religiouswar disturbed the people.
