Railway and locomotive engineering : a practical journal of railway motive power and rolling stock . per hour, the result wouldprobably be a hard fore-and-aft motion, which might prove disastrous to the draw-bar and other parts. The inside clearance of compound loco-motives, as a rule, is greater than in sim-ple locomotives, and there are instances inwhich it is % inch in the low-pressure been demonstrated that, when intelligentlyused, it has proven a decided success. Wehave locomotives to-day with as much asy/z inches valve travel, and it has beenfound that it gives a much improved steamdistribution, and aside from this the aver-age cylinder pressure is increased withoutincreasing the boiler pressure. The effectof the longer valve travel is a later exhaustas well as a greater exhaust opening anda later compression—all of which are ab-solutely tiecessary for the high speedswhich the locomotives are required tomaintain in hauling first-class trains. Thelonger valve travel increases the haulingcapacity of the locomotive, and w-ill showan increase in the number of train-miles JPltj. 3. Fig. Ol- .\ND THEIR COMPOUNR earlier at the front end tlian at the backend of the cylinder, and in order to havethe valves sound square, the exhaust edgeof the valve must be cut away at the back,l)Ut the clearance can be made equal atboth edges and the eccentric rods length-ened out to cause the release to take placeearlier at the back edge, and thus have thevalves sound square; but it is desired tomaintain an equal lead at both the frontand back ports, and this is at once de-stroyed by lengthening out the eccentricrods. This manipulation of the eccentricrods simply transfers the distortion to an-other part of the motion where it disap-pears, so far as we are able to see; but theindicator will show that we have not re-moved the distortion in the bad steam dis-tribution and unequal work performed in valve and ^ inch in the high-pressurevalve (tw
