Execution of the Four Sergeants of La Rochelle. 1879 illustration showing the Four Sergeants of La Rochelle being led to the guillotine. The Four Sergeants were Jean-Francois Bories, Jean-Joseph Pommier, Charles Goubin and Marius-Claude Raoulx. They were guillotined in Paris in 1822 for plotting to overthrow the restored Bourbon monarchy of Louis XVIII of France. Their great courage initiated a liberal campaign and they became legendary. They were accused of being members of the Charbonnerie, the French arm of the Italian Carbonari, an informal network of Italian secret societies active in Italy from around 1800 to 1831.
