Chicago, Illinois, USA. The Union Stockyards gate rests at the intersection of Exchange Avenue at Peoria Street on Chicago's South Side. The gate was built circa 1875 and was designed by the famous architects Burnham and Root. At one time the Union Stockyards sprawled over 475 acresin the area for over a century, until its closing in 1971. The limestone gate, which marked the entrance to the stockyards, remains as one of the few visual reminders of Chicago's stockyards past. Through the arch once passed the people and livestock that made Chicago the "hog butcher to the world". The gate was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1972.
