Gasification research. Gasification researcher (left) and ARS (Agricultural Research Service) soil scientist (right) evaluating potential biomass feedstocks, including pressed corn stover (lower right) for use in an institutional-scale unit. Gasification is the process of converting carbon-based materials, such as coal, biofuel and biomass, into a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, known as synthesis gas or syngas. Syngas is used as a fuel and is potentially more efficient than direct combustion of the original fuel. Photographed at the University of Minnesota Morris Biomass Gasification Facility, USA.
