Matterhorn and banner cloud. View of the summit of the Matterhorn in the Alps, viewed from Switzerland. The Matterhorn (4478 metres) straddles the border between Italy and Switzerland. Its pyramidal peak is one of the highest summits in the Alps and Europe. Banner clouds form on the sheltered leeward side of a mountain, streaming out from the peak with the prevailing wind. The Matterhorn is a well-known example of a mountain that often has a banner cloud forming at its peak. Photographed in May 2014, from the Gornergrat Railway in Switzerland.
