Indeed In every decade since 1870 the rate ofincrease has fallen below that of the nation as a whole exceptfor the period 1890—1900 — the decade of the Worlds Colum-bian exposition. On the other hand, while the rate of increasehas been falling off, the absolute number of persons added tothe population has remained fairly constant and has even grownslightly. This is perhaps a fairer test of growth than the rate, for as the total population increases the latter would normallydecline. It is certain that Illinois is by no means overcrowdedand that the population of the state may be expected to continueto grow, though at an ever-declining rate, in the future as inthe past. The average density of population in Illinois in 1910 persons to the square mile; this was an increase from Population of Illinois,1910. Number of .JWll- ClairInhabitants perSquare Mile 2Zl 18 to 4545 to 9090 and over ALtXAMDCR POPULATION 3 in 1870. How dense this is can best be seen by a comparisonwith some of the eastern states. Such a comparison will dissi-pate any doubt as to the future growth of the state, or the possi-bility of its ability to support a larger population.
