This may sound strange, inasmuchas nearly every beginner starts his golf careereither by taking lessons from the professional orby imitating the style of play of older devotees ofthe links; yet I think those who start playingwhen quite young will catch my point as soon asI give them one illustration of what I mean: takethe mashie, for instance. In playing this shot,virtually all teachers of golf follow the same prin-ciple of play. It is a club we all try to use inmuch the same style. In so far as the style orform of executing a mashie shot is concerned, thedifferences are minor and have but little influenceon the result. But when it comes to getting dis-tance with the mashie and, at the same time, exe-cuting the shot with a degree of accuracy, wereach the point where we have to play our owngame to get the best results
