Point-of-care diagnostics, IBM research. Microchip used for diagnostics ('lab on a chip') as developed by IBM scientists Luc Gervais and Emmanuel Delamarche at IBM Research-Zurich, Switzerland. This IBM system uses an innovative silicon chip and can test for many diseases, including cardiovascular disease. It can also test for chemical and biological hazards and monitor medicinal therapies. The microchip measures 1 by 5 centimetres. Photographed in September 2009.
