The engines were built by thePennsylvania Iron Works Company from specificationsfurnished by the engineers of the Consolidated TractionCompany. The boiler equipment consists of six batteries of forgedsteel type sectional water tube boilers of special design madeby the Babcock& Wilcox Company. Two boilers constitutea battery, and each battery is rated at 750 In order toeconomize floor space, these boilers are shorter and higherthan the usual type. Each is made up with three , 20 ft. long, and 18 sections of tubes, each 15 CONSTRUCTING FOUNDATION FOR STATION An automatic oiling system is used, and the caps of themain bearings have each three oil cavities protected bybrass strainers. From the different bearings the oil is ledto filters in the basement, from which it is pumped to ele-vated tanks, and descends by gravity to the different bear-ings. The air pumps of the jet condensers arc of thedouble acting type, and are operated by a rod from the ex- long, giving about 4000 sq. ft. of heating are designed for a pressure of 200 lbs., and weretested under hydraulic pressure to 300 lbs. The fire boxesare equipped with the Hawley down draft furnaces, havinga grate surface of 66 sq. ft. The furnaces are guaranteedto show 10 per cent greater efficiency than the ordinary flatgrate and to be able to burn 40 lbs. of coal per square foot 13° STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL [Vol. XV., No. 3. of grate per hour, and to reduce the smoke by 92 per boilers with the Hawley furnaces are guaranteed todevelop 7
