Human embryo. Light micrograph of an early human embryo at the 4-cell stage of development, produced by in-vitro fertilisation (IVF). Each cell here is known as a blastomere and has the potential to form a full embryo on it's own. At this stage of a normal pregnancy, the embryo divides into a ball of cells known as a blastocyst. This travels along the woman's fallopian tube and implants into the uterus wall to develop into the foetus. In IVF, fertilisation and development of the blastocyst is performed in culture medium. The blastocyst is then implanted directly into the uterus wall, usually at the 16 cell stage. Magnification: unknown.
