The successful execution of thisduty was attended with the most important results, in obtaining a safe andeasy communication with Bridgeport, and shortening our line of supplies. Smith, Chief Engineer, con-sisting of the brigades of Generals Turchin and Hazen, the boat partiesunder Colonel Stanley, Eighteenth Ohio, and the pontooniers under CaptainFox, Michigan Engineers and Mechanics, in effecting a permanent lodgmenton the south side of the river at Browns Ferry, deserve the highest command of Major General George H.
