View of the face of a 75 year old woman during an attack of shingles, also known as Herpes zoster. A red rash with blisters and scabs has appeared on her cheek, nose and upper lip. This rash is extremely painful and is due to Herpes infecting the sensory nerves, in this case the maxillary branch of the trigeminal nerve. Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus (varicella-zoster). Dormant viruses survive for years in humans until the immune system is weakened by illness or old age.
